چکیده

There seems to be little doubt that genetic factors are likely to be r~sponsible for many of the individual differences in sexual attitudes and behaviour that we have documented on previous pages; nevertheless, there is very little scientific evidence even for genetic causes of male-female differences other than those directly associated with physical characteristics. Even in animals individual differences have not been widely studied in a genetic context; such a wide-ranging text as that of Scott and Fuller (1965). for instance. makes no mention of such factors, and neither does the textbook on Behaviour Genetics by Fuller and Thompson (1960), The present ,chapter may thus be regarded as a preliminary exploration of uncharted waters, unlikely to provide definitive results but perhaps capable of suggesting likely conclusions, Our main intention 11ere is to explore the possibilities of fitting a relatively simple genetic model to our data; the results may be useful as guidelines to future, more detailed, explorations. Before turning to. our data, it may b~ necessary to stress cer-' tain points that are not always understood by psychologists and. psychiatrists who approach the genetic' field on the assumption that the major, or even the only; interest of geneticists is the discovery of a single heritability index which could be used to divide the total variance into an 'inherited' portion and another portion due to"environment', Such an index might be of interest to stockbreeders, but would have little s~ientific importance. The well-known debates concerning the inheritance of intelligence have stressed the concept . of heritability to the exclusion of other. equally relevant, considera-

P30: Are There Anxious Genes?

Anxiety comprises many clinical descriptions and phenotypes. A genetic predisposition to anxiety is undoubted; however, the nature and extent of that contribution is still unclear. Extensive genetic studies of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) transporter (5-HTT) gene have revealed how variation in gene expression can be correlated with anxiety phenotypes. Complete genome-wide linkage s...

Strong genetic effects on cross-situational antisocial behaviour among 5-year-old children according to mothers, teachers, examiner-observers, and twins' self-reports.

BACKGROUND Early childhood antisocial behaviour is a strong prognostic indicator for poor adult mental health. Thus, information about its etiology is needed. Genetic etiology is unknown because most research with young children focuses on environmental risk factors, and the few existing studies of young twins used only mothers' reports of behaviour, which may be biased. METHOD We investigate...

Neurobiology of suicidal behaviour.

It is known that suicidal behaviour has multiple causes. If triggers could be mainly attributed to environmental factors, predisposition could be associated with early stressors on one side such as childhood adversities and genetic predisposition. No convincing animal model of suicide has been produced to date. The study of endophenotypes has been proposed as a good strategy to overcome the met...

Genetic Variability in Growth Hormone Gene and Association between Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLP) Patterns and Quantitative Variation of Live Weight, Carcass, Behaviour, Heterophil and Lymphocyte Traits in Japanese Quails

Growth hormone gene plays a critical role in regulating growth and metabolism which leads to potential correlations between the polymorphisms of this gene and economic trait. A 776 bp fragment within the intron 1 region of the growth hormone gene from 346 individuals of an F2 population of Japanese quail was amplified. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product was digested using MspI restrict...
